On November 28, 2003, Chef Liu brought a dead dog from a market. He returned to the driving school and asked the cook to make a pot of dog meat for supper.  There were 30 some workers in the school. The dog meat smelled wonderful which attracted four little puppies into the dining hall.  One faculty member threw a piece of meat to the puppies. Suddenly the mama dog Saihu ran over and kept the meat under her paw.  She barked at the puppies, and would not let them eat the meat. What a change of attitude that was!  Saihu used to be very loving to the puppies.  She even threw one puppy outside the dining hall when it came over to beg. The rest of the puppies ran off fast.

After all the puppies ran off, Saihu barked at the meat on the ground a few more times. However, more than a dozen workers totally ignored her and were ready to eat dog meat.  Saihu was a little anxious and she walked around and around and barked at the pot of meat.  Others thought perhaps Saihu wanted some of the meat in the pot and threw a few pieces on the ground.  But Saihu refused to eat the meat and continued to bark.

When Saihu saw more and more people came into the dining hall, she started to bark louder and more violently.  But no one responded to her barking. Saihu suddenly jumped up and whined sadly. After hearing her whining, four little puppies ran in. Saihu used her nose to kiss every puppy and licked the dirt off their bodies while her tears ran down. Immediately Saihu rushed towards the group at the front and banged against their thighs, but unfortunately, people still failed to understand what she meant.

Saihu suddenly sat on the ground crying and whining.  After one long howl, she ate the three pieces meat on the ground. In less than ten minutes, she rolled around on the ground with pain, spasm and blood oozing out of her nose, ears and mouth. Then she died.

Seeing that, the dozens of workers were shocked! The dog meat in the pot was poisonous!

Later on, through analysis it showed that the dog meat had enough mouse poison to kill a cow. Because of Saihu, more than 30 lives were saved.

heard of a dog saving people before, but I thought that was just a legend. Now, it happened to us. That was something which happened a few years ago.  Chef Liu was still quite emotional when he talked about it, “I brought the dead dog. If anything had happened, I would have felt responsible. It was Saihu who saved all of us.

After Saihu died, her owners, Mr. & Mrs. Fu, were very sad and buried her in their vegetable patch.

The manager of Ling Yuan in Jiu Jiang City was very moved by Saihu’s story.  He told the Fu family that he wanted to move Saihu’s grave to Ling Yuan.

The Fu family was surprised and said, “Ling Yun is for people, how can you bury a dog there?”

The manager said, “Every life on earth has intelligence and they will die eventually. However, their spirit remains. Wouldn’t you say that Saihu’s kindness and courage are admirable enough?”

The manager spent more than 10,000 RMB and hired a specialist to pick a burial ground, build a casket, and carve a tomb stone.  On December 12, 2003, four workers driving two trucks moved Saihu’s grave.

On that particular day, it rained, but more than 100 people attended the funeral. Some of people who had been saved by Saihu cried. The air filled with the sounds of Firecrackers and it was a truly touching scene.
